ABOUT ROTARY

Who or What is Rotary?

Rotary is a worldwide organisation of men and women of all backgrounds and ages who volunteer their efforts to 'making a real difference' in their own communities and beyond, living up to their motto of 'Service Above Self'.  Now in its 110th year, Rotary International has over 34,000 clubs in 217 countries, with membership numbers totaling 1.2 million plus.

Rotary's Vision is: To make the world a better place for all.
Our international goals include polio eradication, disaster relief, and provision of safe water supplies, medical care, sanitation facilities and education throughout the world.

What we've done
Some of the many capital works projects Manly Rotary Club has completed locally in the past nine years have included

  • Bear Cottage (Manly) – donated funds for equipment to assist in giving respite care to terminally ill children and their families
  • Manly (now Northern Beaches) Community Center (Manly) completed major renovations to the center
  • Manly Hospital – funded state of the art diagnostic facilities and equipment to ensure our local hospital can cater to our communities’ needs.
  • Manly (now Northern Beaches) Women’s Shelter– initiated the establishment of the Shelter for homeless women and ensured that as demand for assistance has grown, more facilities are made available through renovating appropriate facilities at Royal Far West
  • Pioneer Clubhouse - completed a major renovation to provide additional kitchen, meeting and workroom facilities for the vocational rehabilitation of adults with mental illness, and supported the lease/purchase of a new transport vehicle
  • Royal Far West (Manly) –renovated accommodation for children and their families needing medical treatment and respite, and funded research into effective care strategies for children from isolated and remote regions
  • Stewart House - refurbished bathroom facilities for disadvantaged children under care
  • Sailability Manly - provided essential equipment to teach disabled children and adults to sail; and funded a disabled children’s swing on Manly’s ocean beachfront children’s playground
  • Salvation Army - built a breakfast kitchen, lockers and showers for homeless men at the Salvation Army Citadel.

Internationally, our Club has also

  • Funded the purchase of medical diagnostic equipment for use by Manly-based Australian Doctors International on its patrol work in PNG
  • Funded a pilot sanitation project for Friends of Rambutso, in PNG
  • Provided essential funds for Rotary International’s medical and disaster relief programs through its Shelterbox, and End Polio Now campaigns

While also providing critical funding to support to

  • Stand Tall in the conduct of its Manly-based self-development camps for at-risk teenagers,
  • Bushlink in its pilot plant propagation program for young adults with disabilities aimed at developing their employment skills, and
